I'm writing this diary after a suggestion by biscobosco that I document a problem my husband and I had with our first time voting on a Diebold machine. Biscobosco said that there would be a Google cache of this and that it helps to add to the documentation of problems that voters face not only with the machines but also with the lack of education of some poll workers. More below. We were voting in a Democratic primary in Tooele, Ut District 16. Our poll worker walked us through the process and at the end suggested that I push print to make a paper copy of my ballot. I then asked if I would be able to see the printed ballot and she said, "No, it's in the machine and you can count on it." I asked how can I would know that the machine tallied my vote if I can't even look at it. I gestured to the right of the machine because I had seen a demo of voting on Diebold machines and remembered that there was a window you could see the paper through. I could see a brown plastic strip down the right of the machine. She told me that not even she could see it, it stays in the machine. I again said that I thought I should be able to see it, and was speaking loud enough to be heard by any other voters and the people who were working at the table.
I posted this in a comment on yesterday's diary on voting problems, I called my County Clerk and complained, wrote LTE's to my local paper and the Salt Lake Tribune, and contacted Black Box Voting.
Thank you for indulging me on this, I think it's important that all problems with this type of voting be documented, so if you had problems or observed any irregularities, please post them in a comment and add to the record.
